On average, drug use in Utah is about the same as the average drug use in the rest of the country. Among all age groups just under 3% of residents of both the state and the country struggle with addiction to an illicit substance. In America the highest percentage of people addicted to illegal drugs are between the ages of 12 and 17. Among this age group just under 10% of American citizens admit to drug abuse. In Utah the average for this demographic is lower than the national average with about 6.5% of the state’s 12 to 17 year olds addicted to drugs. The state also has a much lower rate of alcohol addiction than the rest of the country. Less than 5% of Utah’s residents are dependent on alcohol while the rest of the country struggles with alcoholism about 6.5% of the time.
Utah’s most frequently abused type of drug is stimulants. Out of those enrolled in recovery facilities in the state, about 28% say that stimulants are their primary drug of use. Marijuana was mentioned slightly less frequently than stimulants with 26% of respondents citing its abuse. Heroin was the third most frequently listed drug in Utah’s recovery centers. 23% of rehabilitation program patients say that heroin is their primary drug issue. Prescription pain-killers are also frequently abused in Utah with 11% overcoming heroin dependence. Cocaine was the fifth most popular drug in Utah. Just over 8% struggled with cocaine addictions.

In Utah, drug addictions are treated in rehabilitation programs about 20% of the time. The rate of treatment for people wishing to overcome alcohol addictions is significantly lower. Less than 3% of Utah’s alcohol dependent residents receive treatment for their addictions. It is strongly recommended that anyone who is wishing to overcome an addiction find the immediate help of a recovery program.
Utah has 137 different facilities offering recovery programs that can help people overcome addictions. Most of the centers in the state are privately owned and operate although there are several public facilities as well. In the facilities about 35% of patients are in recovery for illegal drug addictions, 16% are recovering from an alcohol addictions, and the remaining 49% are in recovery for addictions to both drugs and alcohol.
