The most frequently abused drug in Wyoming is marijuana. In the state’s treatment facilities marijuana is listed as the primary reason for seeking treatment by about 50% of those enrolled. Various stimulants are listed by recovery patients about 35% of the time as primary drugs abused. The third most often mentioned type of drug is prescription pain-killers. Roughly 14% of respondents said that prescription pain-killers were their primary type of drug. Cocaine and heroin were the fourth and fifth most cited substances by those in recovery at about 6% and 4% respectively.

In the various recovery programs 18% of participants are in recovery for illicit drug dependency, another 38% are recovering from alcohol addiction, and the remaining 44% of patients are recovering from addictions to both alcohol and illegal drugs at the same time.
